Message from a Hostel – The Circus is in town

The Manager and Nora had been washed, massaged and oiled.  They had being given several ladies dresses to try on.  They were fed and watered for the night.  They had downed a bottle of the Archbishops best wine and had a good night’s rest. The following morning after breakfast and have been ordered to stay in the room, until the Archbishop summoned them, Nora asked the Manager, “what are you going to tell the Archbishop about the time travelling?” “We’ll not mention that at first, I think. He strongly believes that we are witches.  We’ll have to make sure that he understands that we are not witches, for we are in danger of being burned at the stake.  We will have to convince him that we are from a different land far away.” “Like the land of far, far away in Shrek?” replied Nora “Nora, I might skip the Shrek part and just mention it’s  across the ocean,” said the Manager. “Well you seem to have the Archbishop on your side Lady Catherine,” laughed Nora.  “ I think he might try and burn me as a witch.” “Let me do most of the talking Nora.  Last night just before I went to sleep after the few glasses of wine I wrote down a few notes.  It’s hard using a nib pen and ink again.” The door of the room sung open and in came two soldiers.  “Right, you two get yourselves ready, we are taking you over to the Archbishops main court room,” shouted one of the soldiers.  Nora and the manager were then taken out of the room to the court yard.  There was a horse and carriage waiting.  They were both told to get into the carriage. As they were travelling along the road they were obstructed by a peasant farmer herding sheep.  The soldiers were trying to clear the road but all they were doing was making things worse with the sheep running all over the place.  Nora jumped out of the carriage and started driving the sheep out of the way.  She waved her arms wildly and shouted at the peasant and soldiers to cover the gaps and keep the sheep heading in the one direction. “Mind the feckin gaps, mind the gaps,” Nora shouted.  Within a few minutes Nora had the road cleared and they were on their way again.  “Learnt to drive sheep from when I was knee high,” explained Nora. Those feckin’ soldiers couldn’t drive nails into a bog bank.” The Manager and Nora arrived at the place where the Archbishop was holding his court.  They were escorted into the centre of a large court room.  On a table was the Higulator. To each side of the room sat six men, all dressed like bishops, waiting as if they were getting a call from ‘old red socks’ in Rome. “Fellow clergy, these are the very two ladies that I have spoken about,” said Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. “Well would you take at look at this,” said Nora.  “The feckin’ circus has come to town. Look at all these clowns.” To be continued

hould a Top Quality Hotel offer FREE Wireless Access?

I was meeting a few people a week ago in two different hotels in Dublin.  While I was waiting I ordered a coffee and asked for the access code for the internet service. I was informed that there was a fee. In the Four Seasons Hotel Ballsbridge Dublin the fee was of €12. My next meeting was in the Herbert Park Hotel ,it had a fee of €6 for just 30 minutes. In the last few years, 99% of the hotels/ hotel lobbies and small coffee shops that I have visited the internet access has being FREE. Some locations although FREE limited your time which is very understandable. Of course when I queried this fee with the staff members they were embarrassed and understood my complaint. The standard reply was I was not the first to complain and to apologise saying it is Head Office Company Policy. In my opinion I wish the person who decided to make this a policy would get out from behind their Head Office Desk and listen to the customers, not place their employees in embarrassing situations. Starbuck Coffee Shop and Bellamy’s Pub was within 3 minutes walk and they provide their customers with FREE internet access, their beverage charges are also half the price. Wait for it, I had to overnight in London due to flight delays and the Crown Plaza Heathrow win pride of place. Internet charges are £5 for one hour continuous service. Trouble is once you log on your hour starts and finishes regardless if you log off 10 minutes later. I have to say the employees listened, but Head Office, forget it. I must have been the x number of thousand customers who have complained about this charge I was informed. The Crown Plaza has 400+rooms, on full occupancy and with only 50% using 24 hour web service (£16) that’s a cool £3,200 per night paying thier internet charges. Guess Head Office will keep their ears closed and feck the customer. I can vote with my feet and not return and when poor customer service and the introduction of stupid Company policies come up for discussion, guess who will be top of my list Four Seasons and Herbert Park Hotel Dublin and Crown Plaza Heathrow UK. When will Head Office ever learn to LISTEN?

What For

What For I played football in the house and oh what a thrill Until the ball hit the flower pot and did spill Oh to hide in my bedroom I did quickly go For surely my mum will see the mess and will know Like lightening what a blow to my arse by my bedroom door With a scream of pain I said what’s that for To which Mum replied I will give you what for   While in the garden with my little brother I did play The water hose it was running and the flowers it did spray Just then with a thought the hose I would get I laughed and chased my little brother as he got wet Yet again such a blow to my arse I did feel With a scream of pain I said what’s that for To which Mum replied I will give you what for   While all the guests arrived and their coats I did take Mum was in the kitchen finishing the cake she did bake I asked each guest what would they like, soda, coffee or tea While they all look and say isn’t he a very polite little boy referring to me Just then as my finger was fixing the snot in my nose With a scream of pain I said what’s that for To which Mum replied I will give you what for   So now as a parent with little boys to care and groom When they are bold and bad they must go to their room I am surprised when they ask me the question you know As I did my mum so long ago The answers is the same for each in turn I’ll give you what’s for as you must learn

CEO’s Undercover –What a Joke

Have you been watching these TV programmes about CEO’s or MD’s of organisations who go undercover and work alongside their employees for one week to find out what’s wrong in the Company?  After the week they go home and their partners greet them with something like “oh darling how was it – how was it dealing with those little people “ But wait for it, on Monday morning they arrive to their cosy board room where all the people who are suppose to know what’s wrong in the business and who should be sorting it out are sitting there waiting to be told what is going on in the Company.  Then you hear the CEO saying something like “I worked with X down in production and they said

. we must fix this now in our business, and the person responsible for this section of the company nodding their head in agreement.  I know what they are thinking – wait till I get my hands on that bastard.  All the other senior Directors sitting around the table are praying that the CEO will not mention anything about their department. Next thing the CEO calls the individuals whom they have worked with over the week to HEAD OFFICE (most important place) and surprises them with look it’s me your CEO not old nobody as you thought I was last week and guess what here is a holiday for you. Please give me a break – if the directors and senior individuals in your company including the CEO do not know what is going on in their business and are not out working alongside those who are delivering the services or products and if they are not listening or meeting their clients and customers then they should not be in their job. It’s a simple as that

What are your employees complaining about?

Just very recently while I was shopping I overheard in two different supermarkets employees giving out to each other about their working conditions.   On one occasion I had to interrupt their discussion to ask for directions to locate a product which, I was informed it’s over there. Not impressed with the answer and service – but who am I only a customer! What are your employees complaining about and to whom, you customers, your suppliers, their families?  Do you even know?  Well if you don’t I would find out now. Listen to your employees because your customers are.

What makes amazing teamwork?

When it actually comes down to it knowing and doing are miles apart.  Reading about teamwork, knowing the right qualities, attributes and skills required is very different to being able to put these skills into practice.  One finds, elements like those who want the individual glory rather than the teams glory having a hidden present in a team activity.  The African tradition of teamwork and collaboration is called “Ubuntu” – “humanity towards others’. Yes there are lots of skills and qualities for success that we bring to team working like leadership, collaboration, innovations, here are some of my thoughts based on my experience as to what delivers amazing teamwork from the average to great teamwork.  Common sense is a good option to bring with you into a team, but sadly often forgotten. Key Skills for Success Poor Teamwork Standard Teamwork Great Teamwork Amazing Teamwork Communications Lacking and ineffective Mixed, lots said and lots lost Good and open and present at all times Open and Honest – both verbal and behavioural continuous throughout. Trust Lacking and absence yet mentioned but not practiced Mixed and selective to suit agenda Good and willingness to discussed referred too and time allocated to develop Demonstrated and without question.  Respect for self and others key part of participation Listing Lacking in self and others – with attached judgements before understanding Mixed and can be selective at times.  Used to suit positions Good with understanding and clarity constant review attentive behaviours Demonstrated with excellent understanding and clarity.  Internal listening to the self – respect for others Questioning Lacking and pointed to establish a “Got You” and “put downs” Mixed and selective sometimes a slowness to address the difficult questions required for the task Good and seeking better ways and understanding.  Difficult questions are asked and addressed Demonstrated and seeking better ways of understanding.  Internal questioning of the self.  Pulling the plug address when necessary Fun Only of others Laughter and smiles.  But often with business slagging attached Good environment created to allow the child within expressed Continuous without thought part of the project.  Positive environment at all times.  Expected that this is the only way to work Expectations Not Expressed in words but communicated in undertones Requested and recorder lack of reference during the task Requested and part of the project of achievement examined to ensure focus. Continually reviewed and encourage to achieve higher result from initial targets as the team grows in confidence. Concerns Not expressed in words demonstrated in undertone of behaviours Requested and recorder and hope of they will go away Put into action points in order to remove from the project.  Time spend to elevate as and when reviewed. Put into action points in order to support and remove.  Learning recognised and used within the project.  Discussed openly throughout the task. Support Conspicuous by its  absence Provided when recognised can be selective Encouraged and part of the project goals and learning.  Demonstrated in actions and stories. Feeling of security by teams members No competition between team members only individual competition to do better for the team.  Never requested always present. Challenge Low or nonexistent – if challenged done with agenda Provided when recognised often takes time to emerge Encouraged and part of the project goals and learning Introduced with positivity and encouragement.  Facing inner fears and overcoming personal challenge to improve project delivery. Objectives Fall short or not achieved Achieved put only just often reduced to ensure success outcomes. Achieved on time and in full but wishing and knowledge within the team of could of done better. Better than expected enhanced and a real sense of achievement within each team member. Learning Time wasted on blaming others Only certain Individual learning achieved Team and individual learning.  Experience of self and personal growth Individual growth and recognition of greater learning to be achieved and the sense of WOW can’t wait for more. Would you do it again Not with this team Yes but with a difference. Would call issues earlier. Yes, Captured the learning with personal growth for all the team.  Positive feeling of joy. Yes, learning realised and shared with other teams.  Team members anxious to work with new teams to learn more.  Celebration of success.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY?

Everyone has some story to be told or something they want to say, even get off their chest.  I know from my own experience that I have from time to time.  Only who do I talk too or who do I tell or will I tell anyone.  These are all choices that are up to YOU.  So often we just want to say what is on our mind and that’s the end of it.  Often we want to say that we have our own story but how do I get it out there?  Maybe it is just about writing it down and keeping it to yourself and sometimes it’s about writing it down and sharing it with others. If some of the great writers, singers, artists and musicians did not share their work with the world just think of what we would be missing in our lives. But who is listening to YOU? – Well I am If you want to tell a story or just get something off your chest, or just tell somebody something that’s on your mind, well here is your chance.  Here is the opportunity to use my site to publish what you want to say – read more  Click here YOUR  LISTENING ROOM
