You are not the smartest person in the room.

Thought I would share this extract piece written by  David Weinberger As knowledge becomes networked, the smartest person in the room isn’t the person standing at the front lecturing us, and isn’t the collective wisdom of those in the room. The smartest person in the room is the room itself: the network that joins the people and ideas in the room, and connects to those outside of it. It’s not that the network is becoming a conscious super-brain. Rather, knowledge is becoming inextricable from — literally unthinkable without — the network that enables it. Our task is to learn how to build smart rooms — that is, how to build networks that make us smarter, especially since, when done badly, networks can make us distressingly stupider. My question to you is, are in you in the right networking room?

A Few Chosen Words

When one says I don’t mean to criticise you but ………they are actually criticising you and not what should be addressed and that is the actual action, project or behaviour not the person. When a manager uses the words the Company feels that you are ……….who is this person named the Company?  Where is the person behind these feelings or comments? In our jobs we all would like to know how we are doing and how we are valued by others.  Tell them how their work and inputs are valued and what might help them to improve and grow and develop in what they do, but never attach the person. Individuals suit some work environments more than others, 99% of the time people will know this for themselves.  As a Manager it is your job to support employees to fit into the environment or support them to find their way out. Choose your words carefully and think before you speak – it will make the difference.

Till we meet again

On the 29th April last I wrote about Mike (not his real Name) in a post entitled “What would you do?” While I was sitting at the sea front reading my newspaper who should come along again but Mike.  Looking the worse for wear after a few days on the drink.  He stopped and we chatted for sometime.  Just general conversation about the weather, boxing and County Monaghan where Mike has family.  He had a very bad cut across his lower lip which looked pretty bad.  I was used to seen Mike with cuts and bruises as he would fall over while drunk or get into situations where others might pick on him and hit him.  But this looked a very serious cut, when I am asked what had happened and had he gone for treatment in Hospital.  Mike said that he attended hospital and had received treatment and some medication to take.  With that he produced two containers full of tables which I thought to myself these will not go well with alcohol if he takes too many at once? Mike told me that a good friend of his had slashed his lip with a knife because he was chatting to this person’s wife and they got jealous.  In his next sentence Mike said “you think he would have had the decency to sterilise the knife first” to which we both just laughed. We discussed for a short while longer about would he consider giving up the drink altogether, Mike said he enjoyed it too much to stop.  I said what about thinking that you might live a little longer.  Mike said that he felt he would like to enjoy life and have a short one.  Well it is Mike’s life and he is living it now the way he feels best.  Not that I would agree but who am I to judge? You have to respect his honesty, he could have said yes maybe next week I will give it up but for him why lie. If we are not honest with ourselves who can you be honest with in life?

Who can you help today?

Following a recent radio interview with Mr. Frank Crummey I purchased his book titled Crummey v Ireland. Frank Crummey is the man who in the late 1960’s as a guest on the Late Late Show told of the abuse within schools by Irish Christian Brother. Which lead to him loosing his job and getting abuse hurled at him in the street.  As we have all seen in recent years how true he was with his statements. A man of many different careers and never afraid to support and help those who needed it most.  I have heard many times the saying “if we all put our own troubles out on the table you would be quick to take your own back”. Frank says “All I want to do is to leave this world a little better for my being here” (Page 190). From what I have read you will leave after doing a great deal, not just a little. Great read and well done Frank we could all do with a little of the courage you have to make a difference in this world. There is always someone out there who needs your support, so who can YOU help today?

What would you do?

A young man on the street the other day asked me for 50 cents, the smallest I had in change was a two euro coin, so I gave it to him.  He responded by saying “I only asked you for 50 cents” typical Dublin wit. So I had to explain to him that was the smallest I had.  I had met this man several times before, sometimes he would ask for money but most times he would not and we would just chat for a few minutes. Mike (not his real name), I asked  “how are you keeping”.  As I got into conversation with Mike on how he was he informed me that he was after spending 5 days in prison.  When I asked for what was he in jail, he told me he was asleep on a park bench in Dublin City and was arrested by a young Garda (Police Officer).  Mike told me after spending five days in jail he then appear in court.  In court he was informed that he was arrested for being drunk and incapable to which Mike informed the Judge that half of Dublin City should be arrested as they would fall into this category. I think Mike was right if one was to look around our cities especially at the weekends, there are lots of people who could be arrested ? What constitutes being drunk and incapable? The official definition of being drunk and incapable is when you are so drunk you are unable to stand or walk or unaware of what you are doing or unable to understand what is said to you. Where does the personal responsibility rest? The Judge – imposing a fine of €400 on Mike – what do you think his chances are of paying the fine or drinking the €400 if he had it?  – Possible outcome of this will be Mike will be arrested and imprisonment for not paying his fine.  So what should the Judge do, what options did the Judge have? Garda (Police Office) – should the Garda not arrest Mike in the first place – what about Mike’s own safety and protection from himself and others that day?  Should the Garda arrest the rest of Dublin City as Mike suggested?  So what should the Garda have done and what options did the Garda have? Me – Should I be giving Mike more money that day for which he could spend on more drink or food, what options do I have? Mike – Where is his ownership of his illness and need to seek help? What are the services in Ireland that exist to manage the care needs of drunk and incapable people?

Volcanic Ash and No Planes – The Journey by Road

One never knows the challenges they will face until they come along.  Last week with all the confusion  related to air travel I had to make a decision to support some friends in their travel arrangements.  The two key issues were one friend was in Ireland trying to get to Romania for his sisters wedding on Saturday 24th April.  Three other friends were stranded in Romania trying to get home with no flights available. With all the uncertainty around not knowing when Airports would re-open, time was closing in on a decision to be made as to travel or not.  The only information we had was that our friends stranded in Romania, the earliest they were informed about the airline getting them on a flight was this coming Thursday (a week and half later).  On this side it was looking like Friday 24th April was the earliest airports would open by then it would be late to start to travel overland.  Several options were examined and finally at 5pm on Tuesday last we decided to drive across Europe.  The only way to approach this in ones mind was to look at it as an adventure and just enjoy the journey. Yes in the middle of our journey the airports started to open up but travel arrangements were still affected.  New options were looked at again like getting flights within mainland Europe so our journey would be shorter but given availability of seats and prices been quoted for air tickets, what could one do except continue as originally planned. The route before us was Wales, England, France, Belgium, Holland (a little part), Germany, Austria and Hungary.  After travelling through the day and night and taking turns in driving and sleeping, we reach Budapest on Thursday where we had agreed to meet.  Our friends had made a 17 hour train journey through Romania.  So I dropped off one friend and pick up three others.  The round trip was 4,5875 kilometres. The end result was our friends made it home and her only brother made her wedding.  We had some great support from others helping us to book the boat trips etc as we travelled. Lessons learnt when one is faced with decisions sometimes you just have to go for it and not waste too much time thinking about it, as someone has to call it, I am glad I did.  We made the journey fun and had some great laughs along the way.  I am sure we all got something from our travels, if not just a story to tell.

Boats, Automobiles, Trains and No Planes

With the Icelandic Volcanic Ash stopping nearly all air travel over Europe in the past week like many others I was involved and having to travel over land.  Therefore I had little access to Internet and could not post until now.  Only getting back home yesterday (Saturday) I will rest and tell you about my 2,850.7 miles or 4,5875.75 kilometres trip in my posts in the coming week. It is amazing what one will do when the challenge comes their way. Read more during the week about driving a friend across Europe so it could make his sisters wedding in Romania and at the same time picking up three other friends who travelled by train to meet us in Budapest. They could not fly home due to the Volcanic Ash and were stranded until the flights returned and then were uncertain as to when they could get a new flight home.
