What would you do?

A young man on the street the other day asked me for 50 cents, the smallest I had in change was a two euro coin, so I gave it to him.  He responded by saying “I only asked you for 50 cents” typical Dublin wit. So I had to explain to him that was the smallest I had.  I had met this man several times before, sometimes he would ask for money but most times he would not and we would just chat for a few minutes. Mike (not his real name), I asked  “how are you keeping”.  As I got into conversation with Mike on how he was he informed me that he was after spending 5 days in prison.  When I asked for what was he in jail, he told me he was asleep on a park bench in Dublin City and was arrested by a young Garda (Police Officer).  Mike told me after spending five days in jail he then appear in court.  In court he was informed that he was arrested for being drunk and incapable to which Mike informed the Judge that half of Dublin City should be arrested as they would fall into this category. I think Mike was right if one was to look around our cities especially at the weekends, there are lots of people who could be arrested ? What constitutes being drunk and incapable? The official definition of being drunk and incapable is when you are so drunk you are unable to stand or walk or unaware of what you are doing or unable to understand what is said to you. Where does the personal responsibility rest? The Judge – imposing a fine of €400 on Mike – what do you think his chances are of paying the fine or drinking the €400 if he had it?  – Possible outcome of this will be Mike will be arrested and imprisonment for not paying his fine.  So what should the Judge do, what options did the Judge have? Garda (Police Office) – should the Garda not arrest Mike in the first place – what about Mike’s own safety and protection from himself and others that day?  Should the Garda arrest the rest of Dublin City as Mike suggested?  So what should the Garda have done and what options did the Garda have? Me – Should I be giving Mike more money that day for which he could spend on more drink or food, what options do I have? Mike – Where is his ownership of his illness and need to seek help? What are the services in Ireland that exist to manage the care needs of drunk and incapable people?

Interview for the job – the New Leader

I have started following the British elections purely on the fact that some weeks ago a guy named Nick Clegg mentioned “what we need around here is honesty in politics”, I thought what a contradiction.  So I watched the debate on Thursday evening between Gordon Brown, Nick Clegg and David Cameron along with the millions of other viewers. I looked at the debate as an interview process selecting a leader for the job.  I was not concerned with any of the political parties they each represented.  I was amused when the presenter in the first part of the debate kept addressing the candidates as Mr Brown, Mr Cameron and Nick.  The presenter did change later to Mr Clegg. I thought shame on you all about the immigration question, as a lot of Britain was built up on the hard work of immigrants, this was not acknowledged.  There are thousands of Britain’s living and working outside the UK contributing to other economies.  I must say there was very little reference to the word honesty from any of them.  Gordon Brown seemed to always have three things he was going to do when he addressed a question.  David Cameron seemed a lot of the time on the back foot.  Nick did address the issues well and had solutions but he was given good time to think about the answer as both Gordon and David spent most of their time having a go off each other.  Gordon Brown seemed to concentrate on David Cameron more as I did not think he really sees Nick Clegg as a challenge.  I think this was an ill advised approach. Well based on their individual performance I think I would select Nick Clegg as Leader.  As it is now more than ever that active leadership is required to sort out the issues of Britian. On experience – Gordon Brown has more experience but he has presided over the issues that exist today in the UK and why has he not actioned all the three things he is now going to do to address the questioned asked? Nick – if he believes in honesty, keeps this at the forefront of dealing with current issues and faces up to the difficult issues that have to be dealt with then he could do the job – he is a new face, seems to have creative ideas.  Often having no baggage of the previous political environment is a good thing. So Nick take your hands out of your pockets – don’t hide inside an office and be where your people are, deliver on your honesty and you get this job. Only two more interviews to go?

Anger V’s Passion

It seems to me that British media are looking for signs of anger in their leaders for the coming elections, surely they mean passion.  Can you show passion about an issue without using anger?  If you do not get angry about an issue or topics then you seem to lack passion and ultimately leadership. In one news report they spoke about Nick Clegg and it seemed that they had never seen him get angry about anything except on one occasion on the issue of fox hunting.  I previously wrote on the 7th February this year about hearing Nick Clegg talking about being honest.  I don’t know about you but I would much prefer a leader that was honest and passionate rather than one that demonstrated anger for news headlines.  I don’t really mind what political party one is affiliated to for no one party has the ownership rights on passion and honesty. Very few great world leaders have often shown anger so Nick if you are reading this post stick with passion and honesty rather than anger as you will find there is far less competition out there in the honesty race.

Calling it as it is

On Friday last while driving I was listening to the radio and Kevin Myers was in discussions with George Hook.  They were discussing would you walk passed a fight on the street if you saw one happening or would you intervene.  Kevin said he would not get involved for several reasons especially given the current environment (drugs and the high level of violence) in which we live in.  Even though one might like to think they would go to the aid of one of the individuals involved most people would not intervene.  Whether you believe one should or not intervene is not the question, there is plenty written about this subject. A text was sent into the radio programme and Kevin seemed to get very animated and angry about a text message.  The text from a listener was a comment around his personal safety and assisting others to have him beaten up.  At first I thought what are you getting so upset about Kevin, but as I listened to what he had to say I thought well fair play to you, you are right.  We are much better off with individuals who call it as they see it, are happy to speak out for others and put their own name to what they have to say.  Individuals that don’t hide behind others who accept accountability for what they say and write and who are honest in their views and opinions.  Individuals who just don’t say what is expected of them. Whether one likes what Kevin Myers has to say or not, whether one agrees or not with his opinions, one has to admire him for being honest and true to his beliefs. Finding out who and what you are in life, being true to yourself is vital, we could do with a lot more individuals who call it as it is.

Me Factor

While listening to the radio this morning I heard Mike Nesbitt a Northern Ireland Politician making a comment along the lines that all the children who will be born on the island of Ireland no matter what part of the island they are born on, each have a spark of creativity within them. The role of a Politician must be to take accountability to ensure that these sparks are allowed to grow and come through. This will be achieved by creating a better place for them to grow up in. Well said Mike – and I hope your objective will be met. I have often used the phase “If only we asked kids how creative they were instead of their age think of how creative we would be”. To focus on what is right and to deliver on it is vital for us all to create that future for our children. These children will be tasked as well with taking care of ecah other and the world they live in as we are today. Those that show creativity have always contributed in this world and have lead to our progress, no matter how small. Given the current state of politics on this island and the behaviour of many politician there is more of a chance that the words of Mike will not even reach the surface of any discussion among them. The “Me Factor” are the sparks that are encourage in Government and allowed to grow by the majority of our current politicians. This week again more and more people will loose their jobs and suffer hardship. There is not one piece of creativity within the Government. Except their “Me Factor” and we are ok and time will pass so let’s hope we get through it. So how will these politicians deliver on your objective Mike for the children of the future?

Loosing face

The Chinese have a terminology, ‘loosing face’. It means an embarrassment caused by a person or a situation to another individual or organisation. One thing  the Chinese dislike the most is to ‘ loose face’. ‘Face’ means, honour, good reputation, respect, and one can show ‘good face’ or ‘bad face’. Diu- mianzi, is when one’s actions or deeds are exposed to people, thus loosing face. It is seldom that people complain for the reason that you may think, Most times there is another or hidden agenda. Somewhere the truth is to be found. The current Ryanair and Irish Government issue over the hanger at Dublin Airport would strongly suggest that there is more behind this than what is said openly. Nobody wants to loose face especially a politician. I am fed up with the spins that are put on these matters trying to cover one’s own back side. No accountability and no responsibility for one’s actions. My questions is, where does honesty enter these discussions, as it seems to me not in this arena. Where is the consideration for the individuals who are faced with hardship and unemployment in this matter? Where does a dose of reality enter the world of politics?

Personal Accountability

Why do Irish politicians not accept personal accountability for their actions in public life? Look at the recent events and scandals with semi-state spending, expenses and decision on infrastructure projects, and the enormous over-spends and wastage. Yet not one public employee or minister has been fired. Why? It is a shame on those who know what the right position is to take,  yet do not have the courage to make those decisions or take action. They make all the excuses – and hide behind legal advice. Thankfully, I still believe there are other legal people that would offer different advice  and take the  right course of action. One’s charter is one of the most important things in your life. Our current politicians (with no emphasis on any particular party) have a lot to answer for yet not one of them will accept accountability and take action. All I can say is – you have failed to fulfill your commitment to the people that you serve. Failure to stand up and do what is right is a failure of leadership. Recently a CEO within an organisation was directly informed of an employee at management level who was dishonest. His behaviour was totally unprofessional and he bullied individuals, yet the CEO failed to do the right thing, failed to take action and demonstrate that such behaviour was not acceptable or to be tolerated within their organisation. What a weakness in their leadership. What does this demonstrate to others within the organisation,  except that it is OK to behave like this, that this behaviour is acceptable? This is just a small example, but when our politicians are doing the same thing – then what is the culture they create within our society? How come they expect others in society to be accountable for their actions and behaviours but not them? Find me an honest politician and you will find a true leader that people will respect and follow. Why? Because they will be accountable. When the time comes they will do the right things. I had finished writing this blog when I heard on the radio that George Lee resigned from politics for his own reasons. And most of the people have commented on his honesty and willingness to create changes. I don’t know George Lee at all, but here is a man that has taken accountability for his own decisions and stood up to be counted. If there were only others like him, who stated, “Yes there is something very wrong with the systems we have.” I have also heard on the radio some of the negative comments about his decision. If you are not honest with yourself – who can you be honest with? Do you accept accountability for your actions? Remember – what gets honoured in an organisation or country – gets done. Where is your personal leadership and dignity for yourself?
